Post-Production & Editing Department

What is the post-production & editing department?

Post Production & Editing
Post Production & Editing Jobs, Australia

The job of the post-production and editing department is amongst the most important in the film and TV industry. This team is tasked with turning reels of film (or more likely terabytes of data) into something that people will be excited to watch.

After the raw material has been captured during the filming process, the post-production and editing team gets to work. A team of editors, colourists, sound designers, subtitlers and more must organise the chaos, forming it into a coherent and compelling story. The end result is a polished and packaged TV episode or film, sent onward for sale and distribution.

Post-production & editing roles

Post-production supervisor

The role of a post-production supervisor is to manage the post-production process on behalf of the producer. The aim is to help the producer achieve as much as possible in the editing room given the budget at hand. The post-production supervisor will hire members of the post-production team and manage a strict budget. Their role can span the entirety of the film-making process, starting as an advisor to the producer, and ending when the film is delivered.

Bookings coordinator

Also known as: Scheduler

The bookings coordinator is tasked with managing much the minutiae of the post-production process. They will know both the process and the post-production company inside out, and use that knowledge to manage personnel, equipment and administration of the post-production period of the project. They assist with the coordination of all post-production work, and the scheduling of the personnel, both creative and technical, that will be responsible for completing it. Managing resources, providing administrative support and scheduling bookings are the main day-to-day tasks.

Post-production runner

Also known as: Edit trainee

An entry-level role, the post-production runner can be thought of as the oil that keeps the cogs of the post-production machine moving. The role is comprised of a number of tasks, including answering phones, tidying offices, fetching food and drinks, organising files, welcoming visitors and doing light administration. The post-production runner isn’t restricted to a single department, making it the perfect place for a newcomer to gain a holistic view of the post-production process.

Editor

An editor’s job is to put the jigsaw puzzle together. The role begins in pre-production, where the editor works with the producer to decide how to make the most of the script. Once filming starts they will roughly edit each day’s footage into a series of scenes - films tend to be shot out of order, so the editor must have a good understanding of the story from the beginning. In the post-production phase the editor will work with the director to refine the rough edits into a polished final cut, and will then oversee the addition of music and sound.

Colourist

Also known as: Post digital imaging technician, grader

The colourist is in charge of the look - and to some degree the mood - of the film. They begin by working with both the director and the director of photography to decide a palette, whether restrained or intense, dark or light, warm or cool. After the raw footage is shot and cut together it will be sent to the colourist, who will add the appropriate colour in. Again working closely with the directors, the colourist will need to balance and correct footage to ensure that a consistent look is achieved.

Music editor

The music editor is charged with intensifying the emotional impact of a film or TV episode via its soundtrack. They begin by working with the director to decide the role of the soundtrack, to find a music style that suits and to identify key moments in the film, before creating a temporary score. They will then work with a composer to turn the temp score into the real thing, and a music mixer to create a final dub. A music editor can act as a bridge between the sound and picture teams, facilitating better collaboration.

Deliverables producer

Each film distribution channel - cinema, streaming platform, DVD or any other - needs the film or TV episode to be supplied in a different file format. Slightly different cuts of the film may also be sent to different places to comply with local laws or to fulfill certain contract clauses. Working with the post-production supervisor, it’s the job of the deliverables producer to ensure that each recipient gets the version that they asked for.

Archivist

Also known as: Curator, librarian, archive consultant, records manager

The librarians of the film industry, archivists are employed by large production studios, institutes, broadcasters and non-profit organisations to ensure that productions aren’t lost in the sands of time. When a film is made, the final cut, along with proxy files, the script, stills, the production schedule and anything else of importance, is sent to the archivist to be catalogued in an archive, ready to be distributed whenever it might need to be. One of the few 9 to 5 jobs in film and TV, an archivist may also be tasked with restoring and digitising old productions.

Subtitler

Also known as: Translator, translator subtitler

The job of a subtitler is to expand the reach of a film or TV show by making it accessible to non-native speakers and the hard of hearing. Every audible noise in the production, whether dialogue, music or general sound, must be converted into two lines of text that usually appear at the bottom of the picture. The captions must be translated (where necessary), spell-checked, accurately time-stamped, and moved to another part of the picture if they obscure something important. Subtitlers generally work in a freelance capacity.

Supervising sound editor

Also known as: Special effects (SFX) editor, sound editor, sound effects editor

Supervising sound editors are charged with managing the sound team, which can be made up of people responsible for dialogue, additional dialogue recording (ADR), foley, background sounds and digital sound effects. Depending on the budget of the film they may be brought on board before shooting begins, or only after the final cut of the visuals has been approved. They work closely with the director to achieve the desired sound, are responsible for the sound budget, and generally take quite a hands-on role in creating the soundtrack.
