Tech Department

In the tech department a passion for artistry is only surpassed by a passion for innovation and technology. This team makes software tools that allow VFX artists to work better, and ensures that the entire pipeline is running smoothly.

Pipeline technician

Also known as: Pipeline technical director, pipeline TD

Between high quality live footage and detailed CG elements, VFX is a particularly data-heavy industry. Data input/output technicians are responsible for managing the wealth of files and digital information that VFX departments commonly deal in. They organise, transfer and store files, ensuring that everything is secure and available to those who need it. They are experts in the files used in VFX, and encrypt data where necessary.

Rigging technical director

Also known as: Rigging TD, rigging artist, rigging technician

In order for a CG character to move in a believable way, they need a skeleton or ‘rig’. Rigs ensure heads don’t spin, knees don’t bend backwards and arms don’t float from a CG model’s body. They make a model’s movements not just believable, but natural. A rigging technical director will be in charge of creating these skeleton and muscle rig, allowing a character to move realistically and convey subtle emotion on their face. A rigging technical director will work closely with an animator, who will provide them with feedback on how movements could be more natural.

Creature technical director

Also known as: Creature technician, character TD, groom TD, creature FX technician

In some studios this role is like that of a rigging technical director, ensuring that CG creatures look and behave as realistically as possible. In others the creature TD is more of a specialist, responsible for building software that enables VFX artists to cover magnificent beasts with realistic skin, scales, feathers or fur. Instead of meticulously hand crafting every pixel, which would take an age, smart software is developed that can reproduce a uniform yet realistic look across a model. A creature TD must therefore bring a solid technical skill set to the role.

Effects technical director

Also known as: FX TD, technical producer

Through the development of smart software, effects technical directors make it easier for VFX artists to add effects into their sequences, whether explosions, fire, rushing water or howling wind. They write computer language scripts that generate these effects, and must be adept at solving problems, understanding a director’s vision and upskilling themselves.

Assistant technical director

Also known as: Assistant TD, junior pipeline TD

The assistant technical director is there to aid the pipeline TD in identifying and fixing problems. On top of being able to enact the instructions of the senior pipeline technician, they must also bring a good understanding of the VFX pipeline; how it works, the roles within it and the software used. They should be able to design solutions for problems, and tools that help VFX artists to do their jobs. Assistant technical directors will also be tasked with data management and security.

Software developer

Also known as: Research and development (R&D) programmer

VFX projects demand complex and often bespoke software in order to be completed successfully. The department’s resident software developers will be tasked with developing this technology in line with the needs of technical directors and VFX artists. Not only will they need to be able to create software, systems and tools, they’ll also need to be able to improve digital processes, and facilitate the efficient handover of assets from one VFX team to the next. A software developer must be comfortable being at the cutting edge of technology, and should constantly upskill themselves.
